Lesendro

Lesendro

Lesendro is a historic fortress on Lake Skadar, dramatically positioned beside the village of Vranjina, where its stone walls rise above the water as a reminder of Montenegro’s turbulent past. Originally strengthened in the 19th century by Bishop-Ruler Petar II Petrović Njegoš, Lesendro played a crucial role in safeguarding fishing rights, protecting trade routes, and defending the region from Ottoman attacks. Often called the “Key to the Lake,” this fortified complex once featured circular towers, armory buildings, and lookout posts that controlled access to the northern part of Lake Skadar. Although the Ottomans seized it in 1843 and held it until 1878, Lesendro today stands as a protected cultural monument—an atmospheric ruin easily visible from the nearby highway, offering visitors a powerful glimpse into Montenegro’s military, cultural, and poetic history.
